Aiming to reduce single use plastic in Whitstable

Plastic Free Whitstable

Plastic Free Whitstable

PFW is a group of concerned local residents trying to reduce single-use plastic in our community. We started meeting in early 2018 and by the end of the year we had achieved Plastic-Free status from Surfers Against Sewage, the first place in Kent to do so.

Our objectives include:

  • Working with Canterbury City Council to eliminate single-use plastics in council-controlled venues and events and encourage their support for plastic-free communities
  • Encouraging and offering support to businesses to replace single-use plastic with suitable alternatives
  • Spreading the word through community organisations, schools and public places
  • Organising and participating in events including monthly beach cleans with our partner organisation Whitstable’s Marine Environment Group
  • Reporting to a steering group of community stakeholders on a yearly basis

We've been out and about in Whitstable today putting up the posters for our new anti-litter campaign.

More will be going out early next week at the Tankerton end of the town, as well along the seafront in Herne Bay.

In case anyone still needs convincing that wipes don’t decompose when you flush them: found this one on the beach yesterday. It had been in the water long enough to grow its own ecosystem. Still intact.

🚯 A new report by #KeepBritainTidy & @DefraGovUK has revealed 75% of litter is a result of on-the-go drinks consumption.

‼️ We urgently need a well-designed & comprehensive #DepositReturnScheme to tackle the littering epidemic.
